Arcade Parade a Wandering Success

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Arcade Parade on Saturday, October 15th. Together the F-POPS team, Hungry March Band, and over one hundred people festively wandered through Midtown's largest network of privately owned public spaces. Under LeWitt stripes waving, the Arcade Parade fomented the Social Life of these Small Urban Spaces through festive music, critical observation, site specific play and interventionist sound. Through blocks played and plazas performed, Holly Whyte Way is cemented as path and place.

Join us in Midtown New York on Saturday, October 15th for the Arcade Parade, a free pedestrian tour through a series of little-known shortcuts composed of privately owned public spaces. Between 51st and 57th Streets and 6th and 7th Avenues, there exists an exciting, if unfinished, network of privately owned public spaces (POPS) provided by developers in exchange for additional floor area within the buildings above. Friends of Privately Owned Public Space (F-POPS), in conjunction with the West 54th/55th Street Block Association, and openhousenewyork, is promoting the individual spaces along the parade route as a single entity called Holly Whyte Way. William "Holly" Whyte was an influential urbanist whose books and films championed the substance of successful public space. In addition to enlivening these midtown arcades, F-POPS also seeks to increase their visibility and accessibility by connecting the spaces along the parade route with crosswalks. The proposal for crosswalks has been approved by the Community Board and is now being studied by the NYC Department of Transportation. The Arcade Parade will mark the dedication of Holly Whyte Way through a series of festive events along the nine-block parade route, including presentations of architecture and history by architects Brian Nesin and David Grider, episodes of play from artists Graham Coreil-Allen and Christina Kelly, a moment of site-specific sound by Simone and Claire Ghetti, and raucous music by the Hungry March Band!

Friends of Privately Owned Public Space is an organization dedicated to the celebration and improvement of New York City’s eighty-two acres of POPS. A collaborative of architects, artists, and community leaders concerned with the civic realm, F-POPS seeks to raise public awareness of the existence and purpose of these unique spaces.

June 24, 2011 - Tinges Commons presents Vistaflow, a combination water and watchtower by sculptors Joshua Wade Smith and Graham Coreil-Allen and kiosk painting installation by artist Ryan Neely. Constructed entirely of reclaimed materials, the elevated platform and cistern will feed a gravity-fed, garden irrigation system while serving as public observation deck and hangout spot. Participants are invited to climb, stand, sit and relax on the site-specific, pedestrian furniture while enjoying a ceremonial demonstration of the new watering system. Meanwhile, the adjacent Kiosk will feature a wrap-around painting of geometric abstraction derived from the tower architecture and surrounding public space. Food from the garden will be served and all are welcome.

Tinges Commons at Mirkwood Estates is a community garden and collaborative public art space located on the southeast corner of 33rd and Frisby Streets in Waverly. The site of organic interaction is sponsored by the Better Waverly Community Organization, Greater Homewood Community Corporation, Parks and People, John Hopkins University and Charm City Cakes.

Expect tours, interventions and participatory site-specific works that celebrate regeneration, sustainability and notions of creating anew!

NPS - Drifting Monument
During 15 minute tours that explore some of downtown’s invisible sites and overlooked features, participants will be invited to fill up a wagon with symbolic litter, discrete mementos, entertaining debris and anything else deemed valuable. At the end of the tour, the drifting collection will be deposited around a monument of labor and place. All participants get a free button!

New Public Sites - Phoenix Shot Tower: Views From Below

Exchanging historical vistas from the tower's rooftop with street-level contemporary sites, Views From Below re-views the iconic Phoenix from overlooked, interstitial vantages. Hanging within the frame of the "Views From the Top" educational display, pedestrian photos of the tower hover directly in front of skyscraper views from the tower. Instead of looking out from above, the participant looks towards from below. Free maps locate the vista-reversals, encouraging participants to see the new public sites for themselves. Drifting pedestrian views subvert the tower's rarefied vistas by situating the participant within accessible moments of invisible public space.

New Public Sites
Situated within disparate urban zones of overlap, rupture, ambiguity and interstice, the ongoing New Public Sites project addresses how lost spaces and overlooked features of the city are experienced at a pedestrian level. The project starts with a radically expanded understanding of civic space and proposes alternatives for representing and activating the potential for such under-recognized sites.

Desperate Times at Subbasement Artists Studios

I will be participating in the upcoming Desperate Times, the upcoming show at Subbasement Artist Studios, opening Saturday September 11th and running through October 9th. Five emerging Baltimore artists will exhibit work reflecting a broad range of dystopian anxieties in response to the present state of society and culture.

Darrell Appelzoller’s photographs are built into topographically inspired 3-dimensional islands, exploring issues of individual isolation amidst a wealth of technological communicational devices while we live together in increasingly closer proximity to one another. BHIBTB makes video installations inspired by science fiction films and literature. His videos show a future world in which Utopia seems to have finally come to be a reality, yet this future is extreme in its sterility, sublimely cultish, and Orwellian in its nature. Graham Coreil-Allen’s ongoing project, New Public Sites, exposes the absurd, overlooked, and banal, aspects of the metropolis’ we inhabit through guided tours, videos, and installations, “playfully exploring a thrilling urban sublime through drifting symbols of invisible sites”. Matthew Fishel’s work takes a significantly darker tone. Cinematic in their nature, Fishel’s videos and animations are inspired by, and are in response to, classic science fiction films and Hollywood’s current fascination with apocalyptic scenarios. Sarah McNeil has created a world in which all is not lost. Her sculptures, animations and installations follow the exploits of the Bricoleur Dream Brigade, who with their wit, cleverness, and fantastical devices, combat the negative energies and pervasive cynicism of the current moment, healing individuals and leaving the world a better place than they found it. Desperate Times is curated by Jason Irla who has brought together this group of five artist who’s disparate methods of working are all conceptually linked to finding ways in which to navigate the dystopian world we inhabit. The Youth Dreamers and Tinges Commons are teaming up for a public art show of hand-painted signs. The collaboration between these two Waverly-based groups will focus on the themes of inner beauty and the poetic absurd. Local artists are invited to contribute their own hand-made "Signs of Absurdity and Elegance Within" and/or help fabricate collaborative signs on May 27th and 29th, 2010 at Tinges Commons.

The Typology of New Public Sites (NPS-T) and New Public Sites - Middle Branch Crossing (NPS-MBX) are two interrelated investigations into the invisible sites and overlooked features of our everyday environment. Serving as both field guide and manifesto, NPS-T organizes these liminal public spaces and pedestrian experiences into a system of sites, components and qualities, indexed and described through architectural and poetic terms and definitions. Putting this typological language into action, NPS-MBX explores Baltimore's spectacular southern gateway - the Middle Branch, a majestic amalgam of voids, lost spaces, paths, pauses and vistas.

Participants are invited to explore the Middle Branch Crossing through three modes of transit: car, bicycle and light rail. Sweeping back and forth across the I-95/I-395 interchange, the car tour will provide breathtaking zoomscapes of the water below and city beyond. At a slower pace, the bicycle tour will navigate sites of pause south of the stadium, before joining the Gwynns Falls Trail as it skirts the vistas of the Middle Branch's western shore. Heading farther south, the light rail tour will glide over fluid dynamics and unseen fields before culminating in an excursion of radical pedestrianism.

The Typology of New Public Sites in production

Finally, after many months of site analysis, spatial writing, poetic musing and endless layout work, my manifesto on Radical Pedestrianism/"field guide to invisible public space", The Typology of New Public Sites, is finally off in production at Lulu. This was basically the last day I had to get the book uploaded to ensure that it would definitely arrive before my thesis show opens. From my introductory essay on the book:

The Typology of New Public Sites consists of sites, components and qualities indexed and described through terms and definitions both invented and appropriated. The typology not only represents a system of classification, but also a linguistic intervention. Drawing from the fields of architecture and urban planning, the appropriated terms and definitions are repurposed with complete sincerity. In some instances the definitions for these lifted terms remain unchanged, while in others they are altered, recombined or entirely rewritten. Through invented and appropriated language, this reference book/manifesto challenges the authority of how public space is typically represented.

Anarchy in the Kitchen / NPS-VT-TC

On Friday, March 5th, my latest video performance, New Public Sites - Video Tour - Tinges Commons, will premiere at “Anarchy in the Kitchen,” a Webcast/gastro-performance event featuring work by DC and Baltimore artists. The group show will stream live over the Internet as part of the NYC-based Umami Food and Arts Festival while being simultaneously screened at Eyebeam, The Non Stop Institute of Yellow Springs, Squeaky Wheel, and Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at UMBC. Please join us for a local viewing party at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County at 7:00 p.m.

“Anarchy in the Kitchen” brings together a diverse group of artists who engage in acts of culinary chaos that interrogate the intersection of edibility and aesthetics, technology and cuisine, and prose and produce. From human sausage grinders and battery-powered lemons to shopping cart gardens and text message meals, “Anarchy in the Kitchen” questions notions of digestibility, consumption, and good taste in our daily interactions with the food system.

“Anarchy in the Kitchen” is curated by Laura McGough and features performances, videos, and sound works by Graham Coreil-Allen, Steve Bradley, Bradley Chriss, Adam Good, Carolina Mayorga, Lisa Moren, Rebecca Nagle, Tim Nohe, Natalia Panfile, Casey Smith, and Shannon Young. Upon its premiere at Anarchy in the Kitchen, New Public Site - Video Tour - Tinges Commons will exist in two forms, one narrated and the other performed. The narrated version already exists on the internet and consists of my voice-over led video tour. For the performed version, I wore my NPS tour guide uniform as my body was superimposed on top of the video tour. This latter video was my first experiment using the weatherman-like, green-screened performance technique. More details later...

HOMEWORKS / Mirkwood Estates at CCBC Dundalk Gallery

Please join us at the CCBC Dundalk Gallery for the opening reception of Homeworks, a group show featuring a full-scale, interactive installation by Mirkwood Estates alongside works by well-known local artists Megan Lavelle and Hugh Pocock. In the words of curator Jessica Walton:

Homeworks” explores the use of domestic space as a site-specific medium for artistic practice. Artists in the show install, create, perform, and grow works in and around their living space. In this way the work is part performance, part collaboration, part installation, and part daily domestic experience.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, February 19th, from 6-8pm at the CCBC Dundalk Gallery. In the spirit of Mirkwood, the opening will feature three live performances by musicians Andy Hayleck, Bethany Dinsick and Owen Gardner.

My latest new public tape installation USM-Sine up for Joseph Young's book release party/performance/art show at the Hexagon. Joe asked me to interpret the following story from his new book, Easter Rabbit:

Sine
A white line, across the cement, under the park, through the door, faint and hardly there, to its red center.

I responded with two white lines leading from Charles Street, down the sidewalk, and into the gallery where they continue to intersect before concluding at a red spot.
The show will be up until January 3rd, check it out!

Baltimore author Joseph Young is celebrating the release of his book of microfictions, Easter Rabbit, by bringing together a diverse team of musicians, performers, and visual artists to add their vision to the book’s stories.

Easter Rabbit, published by local small press Publishing Genius, comprises 86 extremely short stories, with some stories as short as 17 words. At the release party, a team of actors will dramatize several of the stories, while a group of painters and other artists will show work inspired by the book. Local band Sweatpants will be on hand to play music composed especially for the event.

Artists included in the exhibition are Lauren Boilini, Graham Coreil-Allen, Kathy Fahey, Luca DiPierro, Paul Jeanes, Magnolia Laurie, and Easter Rabbit cover artist Christine Sajecki. Actors are Linda Franklin and Caleb Stine, directed by Nancy Murray. Sweatpants is Adam Robinson, Jamie Gaughran-Perez, and David NeSmith.

By developing various modes of representation for this project, including the physical map, online map, performative tours and now this video, my goal is to present a well-rounded collection of work that both functions in concert and independently. I hope that the viewer/participant is able to enjoy the project through various access points, without necessarily having to engage all aspects of the project.

Tinges Commons is proud to present its second public art show featuring works by Cyle Metzger and Colin Benjamin. Color Path Projections includes two vivid installations that use line, color and space to emphasize movement along the adjacent footpath. On the Tinges Commons Kiosk, Metzger presents us with PS5, a self-described "paintstallation" that uses two-dimensional plains to imply a three-dimensionality of the space within the image. The colors for the billboard-style painting are intended to be integrative yet vibrant, making use of the area's own palette to emphasize a footpath that naturally emerged from the site and inspired an effort to improve the quality of its common use.

Benjamin offers us Present paths are reflective spaces (here and there), a site-specific, tensile structure of driveway reflectors and bright flagging tape suggesting internal tension and spatial projection within the compact pedestrian zone. The architectural configuration of ephemeral construction materials exists outside of the frame of everyday route and routine, asking the pedestrian to make a mental and physical leap between "here and there". Through playful color and dynamic spatial relationships, the artists hope to enhance pedestrian experience within Tinges Commons and challenge its users to reconsider their engagement with public space.

Tinges Commons is funded by the Greater Homewood Community Corporation, the Maryland Cooperative Extension, the Maryland State Arts Council, Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts.

Project description

Between a suburban strip mall and its urban surroundings there lies a poetic amalgam of spaces both epic and discrete. Situated within the disparate zone where the Trinidad neighborhood and the Atlas District overlap, the New Public Sites walking tour will investigate some of the invisible sites and overlooked features within our everyday environment. On the surface we will engage pavement, piles, gates and poles. Through the terrain we will explore berms, screens, voids and vistas. The tour will last approximately thirty-five minutes and traverse a wandering path under one mile in length.

All tours meet at the New Public Sites Kiosk in the Conner Contemporary courtyard. Please arrive 15 minutes early, as tours will leave promptly as scheduled.

GRAHAM LAND REDISCOVERED!

Many years ago a friend of mine brought his globe to my house to show me something he had noticed. He turned the globe over and pointed to the Antarctic peninsula labeled as "Graham Land". Thrilled with this discovery, I vowed to one day own such a globe for myself. Over the years I tried my best to find such a globe, only to realize most globes listed the Antarctic peninsula as some bullshit called "Palmer Land". It seemed to me that the modern world cartographers had agreed on no longer using my namesake for the area. However recently, to my delight, I happened to notice that my fellow graduate student Catherine O'Connell had a small globe stowed on a shelf in her studio. As we visited the other day I asked if I could examine and the globe, and to my ecstatic dismay I found that this rare sphere featured the proper name for that frozen tendril, GRAHAM LAND. Recognizing my excitement, Catherine was kind enough to gift the globe to your truly.

“Waverly Pastoral” Public Art Show and Grand Opening Garden Party at Tinges Commons, July 26th

On Sunday, July 26th, from 4-8pm, Tinge Commons will host “Waverly Pastoral”, its first public art opening and garden party featuring installations by Liz Donadio and Clarissa Gregory alongside freshly prepared organic food from the community garden. Tinges Commons is a community garden and collaborative, contemporary public art space at the southeast corner of Frisby and 33rd Streets in Waverly, Baltimore.

Waverly Pastoral will feature two art projects exploring natural spaces within the urban environment. Liz Donadio will present “Hidden Waverly”, a series of large-scale photographs focusing on discrete pockets of wild greenery within Waverly. A neighborhood map will show participants where to find these hidden green spaces. Meanwhile, Clarissa Gregory will set up “Waiting for the birds”, a sculptural forest installation of growth and decay populated by a variety of enchanting trees made out of scavenged materials. Combined, these installations will offer viewers a poetic situation of half reality and half fantasy.

The art opening will be part of a garden party celebrating the grand opening of Tinges Commons as a community green space in Waverly. The party will include free food from the community garden prepared by volunteers on site. Resonating with nearby gardens and the local farmers market, this event will be an opportunity for neighborhood residents and the public at large to get to know each other and learn more about Waverly as an exciting place for sustainable green projects.

Whartscape Tapeway and Tri-Flags

I had the privilege of setting up two installations during this year's Whartscape. "Tapeway" was a colorful tape installation along the sidewalk leading into the MICA parking lot. With this piece I hoped to cultivate a sense of visual excitement begining half-way down the block and culminating at the entrance to Whartscape. Various colors of tape began far apart, moved towards the entrance, started intersecting and became increasingly intense as audience members approached the entrance threshold. The installation was well recieved and I plan on doing similar public tape installation in the near future.

"Tri-Flags" were two pair of bamboo tripods I lashed together that each displayed three colorful flags. Both stages in the Whartscape outdoor lot were framed by these vibrant flag stands. More than just stage decoration, I see these structures as becoming part of my growing collection of temporary public event structures. I plan on re-using the tripods with an array of interchangeable flags along side other banners and kiosks in future parades and festivals. This collection of nomadic party infrastructure will help to create a sense place within temporal situations of play and celebration.

Tinges Commons Kiosk preview

The Tinges Commons Kiosk, or TCK, will be a sign structure and pin-up board for artists setting up outdoor installations and public users interested in distributing information. The kiosk's three sides will each address separate but overlapping traffic flows: The narrow side will face the Frisby Street sidewalk and be clad in homasote for people to pin up neighborhood flyers. Meanwhile, the south side will face the diagonal path cutting through the commons while the north and widest side will face 33rd Street. These two longer sides will serve as installation surfaces for artists setting up projects in the lot. With this curatorial/community structure, I hope to create an enhanced site of public art, collaboration and neighborhood communication. Info on the first show soon to follow...

New Public Sites - Kiosk Transmodern/MICA Tours

Earlier today I deinstalled the my New Public Site - Kiosk from Cohen plaza at MICA. As I enjoyed the warming temperature and beautiful sunshine, I found myself gazing as various throngs of relaxed students moved in and out of the Brown, Fox and Bunting buildings. After a few minutes the Kiosk was only a metal skeleton; and I was sort of glad I wasn't waiting to lead a tour. The past three weeks of planning, fabrication, costuming, transport and tour guiding have been both exciting and exhausting. Yet it was through this marathon of movement that I successfully cultivated a deadpan yet genuine character to lead an enjoyable series of intimate walking tours focusing on overlooked features of liminal public spaces.

Audience

Starting out at Transmodern weekend, I was eager to see what sort of audience participation I might get. Initially I had hoped to lead tours on both days so that I might engage both non-art audiences on Saturday and the primed Transmodern attendees coming to see the Pedestrian Service Exquisite on Sunday. Not surprisingly I ended up working down to the wire on finishing the kiosk and costume, forcing me to skip my planned tours on Saturday. Nonetheless, Sunday proved exciting as I conducted three tours among a markedly weird array of performance artists and audience-participants. I spent a lot of time waiting around to collect a decent (4+) number of people interested in the tour. This mostly happened with other tours would hand people off to me. I only wish that there had been more time for us to perform before the Love Parade started at 2:30pm. By 3pm everyone felt scattered and the momentum of the PSE had all but dissipated.

Overall, tour participants were engaged, humorous and patient. Everyone seemed to listen carefully and followed my suggestions for interacting with features in the street scape. Many people commented that they enjoyed the walk while a few folks talked about other odd things they noticed on their own. For each tour I was able to garner approximately 8-15 participants.

My favorite moment during the PSE tours was when I was talking about some linear objects (pipes, poles, branches, etc) nestled between two low walls along Jasper Street and a local resident noticed what was going on. The friendly gentleman asked what I was talking about and then explained that he lived across the street. Without missing a beat, he looked into the crevice and then began explaining the various pile of things we were looking at with the same level of genuine interest I had been projecting. Among other things, the man talked about how he had originally seen one of the displaced signs at a nearby park and pointed out the aluminum gutter I had missed. After some conversation I was off again, impressed with the unplanned yet perfectly performed interlude.

The MICA audience proved to be equally engaged, fun and thoughtful. Naturally most of the participants were students, with a few teachers in the mix. Since I led tours everyday twice a day from Monday through Friday, I had the opportunity to lead a range of groups, from a few one-on-one tours to crowds of twenty plus. Even still I found many students unable or uninterested in going on the tours. Most would explain that they had to go to a soon go to class. Such reactions reminded me of how hard it is to convince people in public space to do anything out of the norm. Many people seemed hesitant to go until I mentioned that the tour was only fifteen minutes and offered them a free button. Overall, I estimate that eighty percent of the attendees had already heard about the project and were making a special effort to take a tour. This response has taught me two things: potential audience members need to be previously aware of the project and also have ample time to participate.

My Character

For my tour guide character I chose to embrace a serious, inquisitive and seemingly authoritative character. I wore an all white uniform adorned with four insignias: the American and Maryland flags, my name, a KIOSK badge, and my free kiosk logo button. I was pleased witht the comparisons my uniform drew; such as ice cream man, astronaut and sailor. I spoke using a mixture of architectural and poetic language in order to convey both a sense of precise insight while acknowledging my role as a non-expert layperson merely sharing my take on the ordinary. In addition, I embraced a humorously deadpan demeanor in an attempt to undermine my role as the authority figure while also holding the attention of audience members.

Importantly, it seemed obvious to most of the people who provided feedback that my character came off as truly genuine. This was imperative to me because I did not want my performance to come off as ironic. Indeed, I truly believe in the sublime beauty of the sites I talk about and honestly hope to instigate a radically transgressive gesture of temporary resignification in public space.

The Tour

During the tours I featured various invisible sites and overlooked features of two discrete urban contexts. For the Transmodern PSE tours I led people through a path starting at Franklin Street, continuing along three blocks of Jasper Street, turning west on President Street and culminating at the grassy triangle where St Mary and Paca Streets intersect. The walk covered an urban transect ranging from barren industrial, to intimate residential, and finally to a ghostly presence of negative space. Along the way I charted a trajectory including a hanging block, empty signifiers, the transition between two voids (parking lots), accumulated horizontals, that which tells us nothing, and finally a daffodil filled triangle where all that remained was just us. Overall I hoped to string participants through a series of increasingly ephemeral sites that culminated at a traffic triangle that poignantly staged us in front a low-lying vista of the park to our south.

For the MICA tours I limited the area to the periphery of the parking lot directly north of the Bunting Center. Starting in Cohen Plaza I led people north along Lafayette Avenue, west on Dickson Street before circumscribing the parking lot clockwise. Along the way I discussed various points including a twisted No Stopping sign, two humming boxes, drooling voids, the Anti-Throne, the transition of an urban forest, and what I called the Paralax of Transit. I drew relationships between the various objects before culminating the arc of my narrative with the impressive vista of the valley before us. As we laid horizontal to appreciate the view, I expounded on the various parallel layers within this intense compression of visual space and then asked if anyone could hear that which made it all possible - Jones Falls river.

Conclusions

As I wrap up these two sets of tours, I am left feeling emboldened and unsure. While I have doubts regarding any large scale audience I might reach with this project, I am by no means deterred. I feel that I personally connected with an engaged, if homogeneous, audience while radically connecting to a gamut of invisible public sites. I say 'radical' because underneath the poetry of my tour lies what I consider to be a powerful resignification of the banal. From the everyday and overlooked emerges temporary monuments to functionalist chance arrangements within informal public space. Whether or not people agreed with my expositions of place, such fleeting moments during which we fluctuate our perceptions of the built environment represents a powerful act of transgressive pedestrian agency. Such walking agency is the the stuff of utopia, a visionary figment of place that will inevitably spring from our own appropriations of everyday space.

New Public Sites - Kiosk Preview

New Public Sites - Kiosk will be a temporary informational structure and meeting point for participants interested in taking my guided tour of readymade urban objects and sites around the H&H building. My animated walking tours will take place on Saturday afternoon, 12-5pm, and Sunday afternoon as a part of the Pedestrian Service Exquisite show, 12-5pm.

I will leave you to ponder this tableau as I head over to the H&H building for a show at Floristree.
1:33am - LIVE BLORG 4EVER.
1:42am - Floristree was fun. I watched Lemonade for the first time and found myself completely impressed. They are kind of like a mix of Big A little a with Joy Division. Tightly rhythm powered and with freshly accented beats the San Fransisco band proved quite danceable. Now I am looking forward to another comfortable night sleeping here at the Dwell.
2:58am - As I get ready for bed I can't help but feel like half of my audience is simply Megan. This space is so much her's that one instinctively want to address her directly in response. Looking over this post, I realize that much of what I wrote was primarily directed towards her. Indeed, she is a prize audience - but knowing her sensibilities, Megan is not one to seek such focused attention. She would want this to be about me, but even in her absence she is inseparable from the dialectic. Making art within and about the situation of someone's home is a unique condition. I am accustomed to addressing a broad and not entirely defined public, yet with this project I find myself more invested in Ms. Lavelle's reaction. This is because I know that half of the psychic power of making art here will reverberate only between her and I, within this space, as separated by scheduled fragments of time. While I will have the other half of audience here on Thursday, I cannot help but anticipate their experience as only a shadow of how Megan might savor the gestalt of my chevron lines. Nonetheless I hope that my other friends will find intrigue, delight and wonder in what I have done, even if they one get to live it for a couple hours.

How We Dwell

I will be participating in How We Dwell on March 7th and 8th. The project is a part of an ongoing series within artist and designer Megan Lavelle's apartment.

In her own words:

"Every other weekend for the next three months a new artist will move into my apartment and produce an installation based on their experience within the space. They will contemplate my space, my four walls, my existence as well as their own. Just as my objects spew information out to them, they in turn, push back and continue the conversation with me and my space. ... The goal here is to re-evaluate how we interpret each other’s idiosyncrasies, habits, as well as how we define our space as “home”. Basically - how we dwell."

As an artist typically working in the public realm, I am excited to see what happens when I apply my techniques of spatial analysis, mapping and intervention to a space of intimate domesticity.

The opening reception will be on March 12, from 7-9pm at 2625 St. Paul Street Baltimore, MD. Hope to see you there.

New Public Sites - Symphony Terrace Vista

Symphony Terrace Vista is a continuation of the New Public Sites installation series where I invite participants to explore invisible or unseen public spaces. For NPS-STV I set up neon pink "x"s leading people to the circular, landscape brick terrace structure in front the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra building at Preston Street and Park Avenue. After climbing the odd HVAC structure, one finds three yellow strips of tape that both orient the viewer and frame a fantastic cityscape vista.

This installation was a part of the Wandering: You Are Here show at MICA's Middendorf gallery that ran December 3-10, 2008.

VXW-MTR Crossing Guard performance

For this performance I served as a crossing guard along the busy stretch of Mount Royal Avenue where a month prior I had set up my "Visionary Crosswalks - MTR" installation". VXW-MTR Crossing Guard was a playful experiment in helping pedestrians cross the dangerous thoroughfare while also exploring some of the hidden behavioral constructs of that public area. I was not impersonating anyone or acting as a character, but rather genuinely serving as a direct action, volunteer crossing guard. I am myself during such performances, and am prepared to face any sort of consequences my actions may provoke.

I served as a crossing guard for approximately one hour while fellow artist Jeni Mattingly so graciously shot video of my every move. The reactions I had were varied, and I was mildly surprised by the slow pace of people crossing mid-block. I ended up spending a little over half of the time hanging out in the median strip while looking out for potential jay-walkers to help. I would say that of the people I did manage to help across the street, half seemed to ignore me, a quarter were outwardly supportive and grateful, and the rest seemed lest than trusting to tried to avoid me altogether.

Eventually I was stopped by a MICA police officer who was concerned for my safety. He made it clear I did not have approval from the school to be a crossing guard and said I needed to stop. I tried to respond with a positive attitude, noting that I had sought permission from the school only to discover that they "couldn't help me out because they do not own the street or sidewalks along Mount Royal Avenue." The officer suggested that I do my thing at a real crosswalks, and not mid block on a busy street. I said that I was just following the pedestrian traffic, and offered him a compromise. I asked if it would be okay for me to simply let people cross during gaps in traffic, as we usually do, while I simply "go through the motions" of being a crossing guard. The officer did not seemed convinced, but could not say no as I had pointed out that this was not the schools jurisdiction.

STREET WITH A VIEW

This brings street theater to a whole new paradigm. Google needs to start advertising when they are doing their panoramic street scans so we can think of more fun stuff to help represent our respective neighborhoods.

I especially appreciate their decision to act out urban scenes that would not be totally out of the ordinary, had they not all taken place on one day along a small back alley. Such subtleties truly helps blur their fiction into convincing half-truths.

Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea

"The seven boats, built by Swoon and her friends from scrap wood and other discarded materials, begin their sail down the Hudson River on August 15th in Troy, New York, stopping along the way for musical and theatrical performances. Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea is a two-part exhibition merging Swoon’s recent portraits, found objects of urban decay and a floating sculptural city. One part of the exhibition is on the water. The other is in the gallery."

I had the pleasure of exploring this majestic city during my trip to NYC last weekend. Months earlier I had accidentally visited Swoon studio in Chelsea as she and a gritty crew of punk-sailors were furiously engaged in constructing the Switchback flotilla. The studio was a fabricator's theater of salvaged wood, nail guns, and strewn prints. When I laid eyes on Swoon's maquettes, I knew that I would have to return to NYC to see the her vision realized.

As I wandered around the docks and adjacent Deitch warehouse last Friday, I could not help but think I was seeing one of Calvino's invisible cites made opaque. After sharing my enthusiasm with the friendly gallery assistant, he promised to pass along my praise to Swoon. My new friend Oeri then asked if I could help him carry a canoe out to the East River, explaining that he needed to tie up a loose boat. I happily obliged, and was rewarded when Oeri invited me along for the trip. We canoed around the dock, ducking ropes and maneuvering against the recycled rafts. I pulled the errant boat against our canoe and Oeri retied the worn out line. As we paddled back to the dock, my companion said Swoon wanted to take the boats to Venice, but they were unsure how to get them there. He said they could build new boats in Venice for less than the cost of shipping the originals to the Mediterranean. Either way, by cargo container or new construction, it looks like the Kublai Khan wont have to rely on Marco Polo to see through Swoon's Swimming Cities.

Visionary Crosswalks - MTR

Last week I set up my first public art intervention in Baltimore. "VXW-MTR"is a continuation of the Visionary Crosswalks project I started in Bushwick, Brooklyn last spring. I set up the installation along Mount Royal Ave, between Lafayette and Lanvale, next to the MICA green. After jaywalking across this block on a weekly basis - and seeing many others doing the same -, this became the first public space in Baltimore I felt comfortable working within.

For this crosswalk I enhanced my original singular, neon-orange, over-spray design by drawing three parallel lines connected by corresponding "X" markings. The overall layout is derived from the surrounding architecture of the plazas in front of the MICA Brown and Main buildings. The Brown building's diagonal layout opens up to Mount Royal Avenue, clearly suggesting a visual and pedestrian connection to the historical Main building. It no surprise then that students, professors, and workers are constantly cutting across Mount Royal Avenue mid-block. VXW-MTR is my attempt to both highlight this casual path to motorists, and "legitimize" the experience as a pedestrian.

In addition to the street markings, I am also bringing an element of performance to my Visionary Crosswalks project through my inclusion of "G-Mack the Construction Guy". G-Mack is the character which I embodied during the nighttime installation of the crosswalk. As a character he serves three purposes: 1) to convince possible authorities that whatever I am doing in the middle of the night is legitimate, 2) as a personal/social entry point to the project for other pedestrians, and 3) as humorous acknowledgment of my role as the artist in creating this piece of slightly absurd direct-actionist, intervention art. Look out for future appearances from G-Mack, both as a construction worker and soon-to-be crossing guard!

"An oblong city, between two rivers, with streets like deep...

"A spy camera video exploration of Brooklyn's designated bike lanes, a conceptual video which addresses the inefficiency of a car-centric city structure, while presenting a whimsical view of a life in constant transit."

This piece was created by my friend Meghan Ciupka-Whiteford; a Brookln-based public artist dealing with environmental and transportation issues. The video's pedal-fixed perspective results in minimalist view of cycling in the city. While initially disorienting, the video's "oblong" and repetitious structure soon acclimates the viewer to the textural and aural subtleties of bicycling through the Redhook neighborhood of Brooklyn. A rythym of pulsing traffic sounds filtered through an ungulating pattern of view is broken only by variations in artist's speed and tactful coasting techniques. The near micro-level examination of travel demonstrates the artist's travails as she dodges traffic, jumps curbs, and takes refuge along sidewalks. The video provides a stylistically fresh and conceptual relevant take on the sensoral and at time dangerous qualities of cyling in a city.

My friend Edd is working on this public space infoscope at the Goldsmith Media Research Programme. He tells me that they have 5 years of funding lined up to continue developing public use technology in urban space.

I finally finished my internet home-base: grahamprojects.com. This has been a long time in the works. I basically just worked full time on the project for the last week and a half straight. Meanwhile, I have owned this domain for well over a year. Its about damn time I got a web presence for my art projects.

I am feeling really good about this whole experience. I have built a four or five websites over the years. However, each time I sit down to build one, its been so long that I have to completely re-learn whatever program I am using to build the site. This time I made major progress, as I began to learn how to write in straight HTML code. I am now feeling confident this foundation will serve me well in the future as I continue to do work on the web.

Pocket Utopia is pleased to present it's second neighborhood public art project: Visionary Crosswalks by artist Graham Coreil-Allen. Presented in-situ, Visionary Crosswalks will be a series of interactive crosswalk installations throughout Bushwick.

Graham Coreil-Allen will create five temporary "crosswalks" demonstrating some of the casual paths that pedestrians take when navigating various intersections in the northwest section of Bushwick. Coreil-Allen will also install interactive posters around the crosswalk sites and other locations. The posters will consist of a neighborhood map with a detail of particular intersections, and will posit this question: "How did you get here?" and "How did you cross the street?". Each map will also include a marking pen so that passers-by may answer the questions. Coreil-Allen will periodically collect these maps and use the participants responses as plans for installing additional crosswalks.

As part of Pocket Utopia's ongoing "Social Saturday" series, Coreil-Allen will screen a video documenting the crosswalk footage on May 24th from 4:00 pm. The "Visionary Crosswalks Social Saturday" will be a fun and casual opportunity to watch videos, hang-out, and foster discourse on the pedestrian experience in Bushwick.

New Public Sites – Bushwick, is a collection of four site-specific installations located in appropriated "public" spaces in Bushwick. The sites differ from traditional public spaces in that they are privately owned and have fallen into various forms of "disuse". The installations consist primarily of subtle incursions of surveyors tape. Gestures of bright pink lines suggest possible paths or points of focus. Participants are invited to investigate each site with caution and curiosity. Explore at your own risk.

Lightning Bolt and DMBQ - CROWDSURFING DRUMMER!!!

A couple of weeks ago I went to go see art metal noise makers Lightning Bolt at a Todd P show here in Bushwick. I was with Mark, Maggie, and Meghan. The space was an enormous, unused second story loft simply called "Above the Auto Parts Store". After a few local bands played, DMBQ took the stage. These Japanese psychedelic acid metal rockers nearly showed up the headlining Providence duo Lightning Bolt. DMBQ wore polyester shirts while noodling their way from one song to the next. In true rock and roll form, they played with their teeth, climbed the stacks, and ended with an unexpected finale. As they kept on extending the final song, the singer donned a monster mask and began transforming the drumset. Piece by piece, he took the drumset away from the drummer and threw it all in the crowd for people to hold above their heads. Within moments the drumset was reconfigured, and the drummer was crowd surfing. Blowing our collective, sweaty minds, the drummer climbed on top of the crowd, sat down at his hand-elevated drumset and finished playing the song. TRUE FUCKING STORY. Then Lightning Bolt played. You have to see it to believe it: ENJOY!

07 05 26 Bicycle Fetish Day and Best Hand Built Bike!

A few weekend ago I stopped by the Bicycle Fetish Day Block Party in Williamsburg with Margie. This was the place to gawk at cool/crazy/loud/expensive bicycles. I had only planned on staying a couple of hours until I learned that they were holding an open contest for best bikes in various categories. Categories included best track bike, best heavy bike, ugliest bike, best renovated bike, most unusual, etc.. I entered my bike and gave my story to a number of judges. When they started to announce the winners I listened carefully. To my dissmay, best track bike was awarded to some guy who attached a bottle opener where his water bottle cage usually goes. But all was not lost. As the emcee began to describe the next awardee, I realized that she was giving my story. Sure enough, moments later I was holding a City Reliquary Museum ribbon for Best Hand Built Bike! Needless to say, its quite satisfying to have my dream bike recognized by a group of my Brooklyn bike nerd peers. THANKS NYC!

For Zach's 26th birthday, Quinn organized a surprise Ninja critical mass and dinner at Ninja New York. All of us met up at the corner store near their place and got into our respective Ninja gear. Then we all lined up in front of their stoop and waited. Moments later Quinn sent Zach to take out the garbage, where he found all of his Ninja friends waiting. The subsequent Ninja critical mass was amazing. We had no problems stopping traffic. Ninja New York was also amazing. Everything was Ninja, and a good time was had by all.

Join the Bushwick Art Parade and Public Showcase! We are looking for artists, performers, musicians, and anyone else interested in reclaiming the streets and sharing our creativity with the neighborhood.

On Saturday, June 2, 2007, starting at 11:30 am, B.O.S. will be holding the Bushwick Art Parade and Public Showcase. The parade will start at Mckibben Street, between Bushwick Avenue and White Street, and wind its way down to Maria Hernandez Park. At the park we will present an assortment of fun public activities, such as games, installation, music and theater. We are looking for local artists, performers, musicians, and anyone else interested to join us. Eccentric costumes, colorful flags, spectacular floats, unheard of sound, and unthinkable drama â?? we want it all. Anything is possible (almost). If you have an idea, and you can make it happen by June 2nd, tell us about it! The event will stage at 10:30 am, and conclude at approximately 1:30 pm. The parade is completely free and all entries will be accepted. Proposals need to be in a soon as possible to be included on the free promotional parade map.

INFO FOR PARTICIPANTS

The parade will stage at 10:30am on June 2nd along Mckibben Street, between Mckibben Court and White Street. SEE MAP HERE. If please call me if you find yourself running significantly late, my cell number is 917 683 5922. When you get to the staging area please look for our check in table next to Potion Cafe. At the check in table myself or a BOS parade volunteer will give you a placement number. This number will indicate you position in the parade. For projects that are time based and or interactive, this number will merely indicate your beginning position. The parade will begin promptly at 11:30am and make its way to Maria Hernandez Park.

Be advised that this is a permitted parade, meaning we will have a police detail. With that in mind, lets try to keep everything legal. The escort will most likely consisting of one patrol car and two cops on scooters. The exact route has yet to be finalized. I will update you with the final parade route sometime soon.

The parade will culminate with our Public Showcase at Maria Hernandez Park. SEE MAP HERE. Feel free to plan on fun, interactive activities that will be suitable for the park, such as performances, games for children, public art making, temporary installations, etc.. Please let me know before hand if you plan on doing something for the public showcase.

Meet my new bike, GRAHAM!

So for the past 6 months or so, I have been patiently working on building up my new, ultimate dream bike. The story is long and winding, but here is what you need to know. My dear Blake High School cohort, Zach hooked me up with an all elliptical tubing Panasonic track frame made some time in the early 80s. He could not find anything like it in the Panasonic history, and certain clues suggest it was most likely a custom frame built for a racer sponsered by the company. A few months later, Zach also hooked me up with a very affordable powdercoat job. Trackstar was doing a custom run of limited edition 80s era BMX themed track bikes, and I got to informally throw my frame into the batch. I went with seafoam green, and was very please with how it turned out. Over a period of 3-4 more months I patient collected the various components that I would need to not only complete my dream bike, but also make it undeniably beatiful. The last thing I needed were the rear spokes. I finally got them last Friday, and built up the rear wheel on Saturday. Now it is my utmost pleasure to introduce to my newest and coolest bike: Graham. Thats right, I named my bike after me. BEHOLD!

I am Leo, and it is only fitting that my bike be branded with the Trackstar lion logo. I spent a lot of time modifying the NOS Shimano BMX mini brake lever to get to fit around my Nitto drops. Thanks for the Dremel tool, Dad!

All shots taken in the empty lot next door to my bedroom. Noe that I chose to use a Deep-V rim on the rear wheel and an Aerohead rim on the front. This was both for aesthetics and strength matching.

Note the custom lugging detail on the Benotto fork. That was a very nice touch, brought to you by Brad and his Girlfriend. I think that this nicely compliments the gold Chris King headset, which literally and aesthetically functions as the 'crown' of my dream bike.

Yes, I must point out that I got a WHITE CHAIN TO MATCH MY WHITE RIMS!

My wheelset features Zip hubs and Velocity rims, hand built by yours truly.

03 07 Bushwick Densification Fantasy Map and English Kills Opening

The following is documentation of my "Bushwick Densification Fantasy Map" installtion at English Kills gallery. My installation consists of a huge map of my neighborhood, Bushwick. This piece served as an opportunity for me to satisfy my cartographic desires. I used to play a lot of Sim City, and this sort of art is a continuation of that game in my head. Basically, I used the existing road/building/landscape layout as a template for developing a fictitious Bushwick city. I drew the city in Illustrator using an aerial collage from Google Earth. This drawing was the basis for the wall installation, and also served as a sellable object (limited edition prints are availble at the gallery). The show was a blast. I really enjoyed the process of setting up along side all the other artists.

Niki helped by bringing a projector. We were able to use this to get the drawing started. However, unfortunately, my first two sets of materials would not stick effectively to the wall. I had to come back the following night with new, non-dollar-store tape.

The beginning: silver tape means arterial roads.

Growth: medium roads combine with mass transit or bike lanes.

I am presenting a huge neigbhorhood map installation at English Kills, a new gallery in Bushwick. The opening party will be this Satuday, March 31st, from 8-12pm. This will be the gallery's inargural show, and will most definately be a lot of fun. My installation will consist of a 30' x 15' map constructed out of surveyor's tape applied directly to the wall. The map is another one my my "fantasy" interpriations of my neighborhood, Bushwick. This will be a group show, and we will be selling affordable prints of our works. Mulberry Street, Nolita - caked in snow, next to my work. I found this scene beautiful, but ultimately not that fun - my skinny bike tires could not handle such conditions.

YAY, the sun finally came out! Here we have a remarkable piece of graffiti left on the big plaque leading up the Williamsburg Bridge. This piece lasted an impressive TWO WEEKS before someone finally tagged over it. Thats a hell of a long time for one a single piece of art to last on such a prime piece of visual real-estate.
